 2017 Preview

Central completed the 2016 season with a 9-3 record. Last year Central captured the region four title and a number one seed in the Class 5A playoffs. They finished region play with a 6-0 record. Central reached the second round of the playoffs before falling to St. Pauls by a score of 48-14.

The defense allowed a team record 265 points last season.

Central is a relatively new football program having fielded a team only five seasons. They have managed a record of 43-17 over the past five years.

The Volunteers are led by head coach Kris Herron who is entering his fifth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 33-15 over the past four seasons at Central. Under his direction the Volunteers have qualified for the playoffs a total of four times. They have won one region crown with Coach Herron.

Coach Herron's overall record as a head football coach in seven season stands at 66-23 (74.2%). Over the course of his career, Coach Herron's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of seven times and won two region championships.

The Central Volunteers will play in Class 5A region four during the 2017 season.

The Volunteers should be considered one of the favorites for the region four championship this season and a home game in the first round of the playoffs.

The Volunteers open the 2017 season at home against non-region opponent Munford on Friday, August 25 at Volunteer Stadium. Last year the Munford Lions finished with an overall record of 6-5 and in fourth place in Class 4A region three. The Lions lost in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs to Bibb County by a score of 41-34.

Central and Munford have met a total of 8 times on the football field. The Volunteers have a 8-0-0 record against the Lions. They last met in 2016 with Central winning by a score of 14-10.

Great Moments in Alabama High School Football History

In 1969 the two point conversion was adopted for play following a touchdown. Until that time all conversions were worth one point.
